Appalachian Dreaming

I first began thinking about this piece back in may of last year. I had my idea of what I hoped the final piece would be and even began sketching it out and applying newspaper in certain areas. Almost a year later now I pulled back out the canvas and was ready to finally complete it. I began applying paint in the areas of the foreground that I wanted to make sure were detailed and obviously in front of everything else. Next I went about applying newspaper, color pencil, dyes, marker, and acrylic paint in a more loose fashion across the whole piece. Then I wanted to create an area of emphasis on the Grandfather Mountain profile. I chose a blue/purple color palette for this area to help unify all of the mountains and help it stand out from the rest of the painting. In the past I would finish paintings with a glossy acrylic medium that you brush on. This time however I chose a clear acrylic gloss spray paint from walmart that is much faster to apply and has similar effects. In the end it bumped up the contrast between lights and darks. It also gave it a smooth completed and glossy look.

TJ Schiller Ski Design Competition

This design was for a global design competition put on by professional skier TJ Schiller to design his 2010/11 ski for next year.

Here was my first design-

I revisited the design a week or two later and came up with this which I was much more pleased with-

Ridge Crest

This is my first attempt at doing 3-dimensional work. The whole piece is around 8 feet long and 4 feet high. Having never worked on such a large scale before it was a little daunting to say the least when I first started it. I cut my initial shape out of one large sheet of plywood and kept cutting more pieces to laminate them out even further in attempt to add more dimension. For the sphere i just got a large toy ball from walmart. Im happy with how it turned out structurally but in the future I will more than likely be painting it again.

Perspective From Wave

Perspective from Mountains

Heres my artist statement I had for when it was in the gallery-

When I think of North Carolina I immediately think of mountains it is who I am, where I live, and what I love. What is so amazing about North Carolina though is its diverse landscape. Where in just a few short hours you can go from a hot sandy beach to beautiful pristine mountains. This is my attempt to portray such a diverse landscape in a linear and 3-dimensional form. A rising sun resonates deeper for me then in most and is prevalent throughout much of my work. I chose brighter colors instead of the more earthy representative tones for my subject matter in an attempt to create a more electrifying feeling. I went to the extremes on my colors and used a brighter/teal blue to represent the blue ridge mountains that are usually much darker in actual appearance. As for the ocean a lighter purple thats not so dark as the sea: in attempt to better coincide with my choice of a blue hue.
